Nafplio

The city of Naflio itself is one of the most picturesque cities in Greece. Being the first capital of the modern state of Greece, it also has a very rich history. You can read the Wikipedia entry for Nafplio here. Places to explore in Naflio include Acronauplia (where the workshop hotel is located), Bourtzi, a small fortified islet overlooking the Nafplio harbor, and Palamidi, a sprawling castle located on top of a nearby promontory overlooking Nafplio.

Mycenae

Less than half an hour's drive (25km) from Nafplio is Mycenae, one of the major archaeological sites of Greece. Mycenae was a major city as well as cultural center of pre-classical Greece, and a visit to the remains of its citadel is highly recommended. You can read the Wikipedia entry for Mycenae here. You can find travel directions from Nafplio to Mycenae here.

Epidaurus

Around half an hour?s drive (30km) from Naflio you can find the ancient city of Epidaurus. In antiquity, Epidaurus was an important cultural and ailment-treating center. Its Roman open-air ancient theater has survived in excellent condition, and regularly hosts open-air events, notably Greek dramas. You can read the Wikipedia entry for Epidaurus here. You can also find travel directions from Nafplio to Epidaurus here.

Mystras

A little less than 2 hours (and approx. 120 km) from Nafplio you can find Mystras, a walled city on the top of a hill overlooking the Spartan plain, and a major political and cultural center of medieval Greece. The remains of the city offer a very interesting glimpse in that period of Greek history. You can read the Wikipedia entry for Mystras here. You can also find travel directions from Nafplio to Mystras here.

Olympia

Further away (approx. 150 km and a two-hours' drive) lies Olympia, also a major Greek archaeological site. The Olympic Games of antiquity were taking place here, for many centuries. The archaeological site is extensive, and the nearby museum has a large number of excellent exhibits. You can read the Wikipedia entry for Olympia here. You can also find travel directions from Nafplio to Olympia here.

Nearby Islands

If you are interested in visiting nearby islands, one option is to drive to the picturesque village of Porto Cheli (approx. 80 minutes and 80 km through country road) and take a short ferry ride to Spetses. If you are interested in a daily excursion, you can drive to Tolo (approx. 15 mins) and take a daily cruise to the islands of Poros, Hydra, and Spetses. The reception staff can provide more information on these options.
